While at Zynga/ZW3 I was asked to help broaden their existing IP by creating a character called an Echo. The Echo was meant to be a companion to their existing characters called the Oras and needed to have "swappable" features just like their bigger siblings. This was one of many early designs based on retro gaming systems and cartridges.
It was eventually decided that the Echo should incorporate some of the features of their older siblings and not stray too far from the original design. The ghostly look of this design (including a pixel art version) is a nod to them being the spiritual successor to the original IP.
This final version of the Echo was a perfect blend of old and new. The silhouette is elegant in its simplicity and felt right at home with the original IP. It was new enough to stand on its own but not too different that it would directly compete with the characters that inspired the design. The addition of the ZW3/Sugartown logo for their eyes is my favorite personal touch.

At the start of 2022 my wife of 12 years unexpectedly told me she wanted a divorce. What followed were some of the most emotionally taxing months of my life. I tried everything I could think of to keep things together but all I could do was sit and watch our relationship burn. This piece helped me see that love isn’t always black and white and its full spectrum of color can sometimes only be seen when illuminated by flames.
Feelings of loneliness would come to visit me often while I was healing from the physical, emotional, and spiritual severing from the woman I knew as my friend and lover. Accepting and embracing them felt like allowing a ghost to haunt my home and whisper lessons of love and regret as it drifted from room to room.
